The following day we entered the peninsula proper and headed towards Piramedes where we would take the boat ride to see the Right Whales. We were there late in the season, and evidently if you are there in season, you can see the whales right off the shore, and you only need to be on the boat for maximum 15 minutes before there are whales all around you. The whales were leaving now, so we were at risk, but after 1 1/2 hours of boating further out, we finally encountered a mother and her baby. We even saw a few more further out breaching, but they were far away. The ones that were close stayed close the whole time, even swimming under our boat.

After being mesmerized by the whales, we drove to the southern point of the Peninsula, to Punta Delgada, famous for its colonies of elephant seals. You be right on the beach with them, so long as you sit down and don't get in between them and the water. Unfortunately, the males with the trunks were out at sea, but the females and adolescents kept us plenty entertained with their noises, yawns and fights. We spent the evening watching them, and then headed back to the beach in the morning again to sit and watch them.
