In February 2008, I visited Bhitarkanika National Park in Orissa with my friend Jayanth. We spent 3 days in the park exploring by boat and by foot with the prime intention to see crocodiles, water monitors, rare kingfishers, and the mass Olive Ridley turle nesting. We were successful on the first three, but unfortunately the nesting hadn't happened yet, and we only saw the sad sight of dead turtles washed up onshore. Bhitarkanika is a jewel of a park and thoroughly enjoyable on a sunny day when the wildlife comes out in droves. Crusiing through the creeks has the true feeling of a safari, and the 3.5km trek inside the park could take you a day if you took time to enjoy it. The place is made even more fascinating by the role of the tide, which can change water levels more than 10 feet in the creeks. Wildlife seems to be doing well there. I just hope the turtles come to nest.
