We spent two weeks in Bhutan. The trip started in the capital city of Thimpu (only 40,000 people and no traffic lights), and then we headed into the country side, through high passes with great views of the Bhutanese Himalayas. We went into the valley in Punakha, before starting on a 3 day trek through the countryside, rice terraces, and some pretty arduous climbs for what is considered the easiest hike in Bhutan. Then by car we went through numerous passes before arriving in one of the larger valleys, Bumthang, where we spent a few nights, before making the long journey back to Thimpu. The last three days were spent in Paro, where the largest festival (tsechu) of the year takes place. Here we saw the Bhutanese dress up in their best clothing and a true festival atmosphere that had nothing to do with tourists. The festivals were highlighted by monks dancing in elaborate costumes, and is culminated by the unveiling of the largest thongka in Bhutan.
