In May of 2008, I made a trip to the Northern part of West Bengal to a region known as the Dooars to visit three parks, Chilapata, Jaldapara, and Buxa. I also visited another park in the foothills of the Himalayas called Neora Valley. This trip was a different type of wildlife trip in that the focus was on the forest itself rather than on its secretive denizens, though the rhino sightings in Jaldapara were excellent. Buxa also afforded me the chance to hike a little and play football with kids in the hill villages. This was a trip that tested my patience, as the parks are not really set up for real wildlife lovers, and the phrase "special permission" was often heard when I made any enquiries about going to the true interiors of the parks. Better planning would have helped me get a better experience, but I enjoyed things nonetheless.
