In January of 2008, I went with my cousin Shuchi for a short weekend to Jaisalmer, stopping in Jodhpur for a day before hand. Jaisalmer is on the western border of India, and is at the edges of the Thar desert. The city is most famous for its fort, considered one of the oldest living forts still in existence. We did a lot of walking inside the fort and through the small lanes of the city getting a chance to see some of the amazing Havelis. We also made a hard fought excursion into Desert National Park where we managed to see but not photograph the endangered Great Indian Bustard (G.I.B.) and ubiquitous Indian fox. Our hosts took us to some off limit "naked" dunes, but we also went to the much more popular Sam Dunes, which were impressive but depressingly dirty with garbage. The highlights of Jaisalmer were the incredible carvings on all the buildings and the Jain temples inside the fort.
