In December of 2006, I went to Kashid, a beach area about 3 hours south of Mumbai. For the most part, it is completely empty with nothing to do but explore the small coastal villages and watch the kids playing cricket on the giant peaceful beach. Not at all what you would expect so close to Mumbai. The last 90 minutes of the drive is very scenic as well.
