In August of 2006, I visited Ladakh, in the northern most region of India. Here I was surrounded by some of the most astounding mountain scenery anywhere, visited beautiful monasteries built up these mountains, traveled the highest navigable road in the world at 18,200 feet, and hiked through the Hemis National Park staying in the homes of villages along the way and climbing to the highest point I've ever climbed, 16,400 feet. We drove on crazy crazy roads regularly above 15,000 feet, never anywhere near paved, and rarely with more than room for one car, and barely that. I visited Pangong Lake and the Nubra Valley desert and was very lucky to see a lynx with a kill - pretty much unheard of to see let alone photograph. I'd like to go back in the winter when it will be stupid cold, but covered in white!
