In May of 2003, Niyati and I went for a short trip to Mexico, along Riviera Maya, south of Cancun. Not our typical vacation, but it was nice to go somewhere warm and without adventure for once. Cancun is a terrible place, but the beaches and resorts to the south are much better, and there is a much nicer small town without all the spring breakers called Playa Del Carmen. Given our recent appreciation for really nice hotels, we picked out a fancy one, La Paraiso De La Bonita, which turned out to be a spectacular hotel with a mediocre beach. The grounds, room, pool, and general areas of this place were top notch, the spa was excellent, and so was the service. We had our own private pool with our villa, and were close to the beach. The beach, though deserted, was full of seaweed and they groomed it with tractors each morning, so it looked a bit funny. Wasn't the nicest place to swim, and there are much nicer beaches along this area. But for relaxing at the pool, or in your room or veranda, or for spas, I highly recommend the hotel. We weren't sedentary however, as I just can't sit still. We did a snorkling trip to Xel Ha, touristy I know, but a great place for Niyati to snorkle for the first time, and we did see a huge sting ray at the bottom. All in all, a good place. We went to Cozumel for a day, and rented a moped. We also did some snorkling in deeper waters in the sea, but just not as impressive as I had expected it to be. I had always heard that Cozumel had great reefs, but these all lacked any color, and didn't have a treemendous amount of fish. No more than Xel Ha anyway. We also visited Tulum, ancient Mayan ruins right along the coast with amazing water color right behind it.
