In August 2003, we went with our friends Chris and Rae to San Juan, Puerto Rico to attend the 2003 World Salsa Congress. Thats not to say we went there to dance, but we went to watch the dancing mainly. We just went for the weekend, watched choreographed performances on two nights, and also watched at the dance parties that happened afterwards. Probably 2000 people dancing in a big room, all seemingly experts at salsa. We wouldn't have dreamed of trying to join in. It was quite a social culture as well. No one danced together more than one dance, and no one seemed to be there as a couple. But when they danced, you would have thought they knew each other for ever, as it was very intimate. But at the end of the dance, a small kiss, a thank you, and on to the next partner. We also spent some time walking around San Juan, which was a very cool old town, actually the oldest in the Americas besides Cuzco. Not much to do, but a great place to just walk around. We also spent some time renting bikes and riding along the beach.
