In April of 2008, I made a quick morning trip to Rangannathittu bird sanctuary, about a two hour trip from Bangalore. It's a small place, about 29 acres, but loaded with birds, most of which allow you go to get very close by boat. It was nesting season when I was there, and it was easy to see the chicks of open billed storks, painted storks, and spoonbills without being obtrusive. There are also crocodiles in the water, and I saw a few. The coolest thing though was the hundreds of eagle sized fruit bats hanging up side down from the trees, occassionally flying and showing you their sheer size.
