In July of 2007, I made an eight day trip to Rwanda. The main reason for going was to see the engangered mountain gorilla, of which there are only about 700 left in the world, but I explored the country beyond the gorillas and found amazing agricultural landscapes, dense forests, mysterious volcanoes, and amazingly reslient people still recovering from the genocide in the early 90s. Rwanda will always be haunted by its past and it is not easy to hear the stories of what transpired. But their candid and open approach to confronting it and reconciling is something many other countries can learn from.
